Derby Rocz Episode #58

Episode 58 - It's Going To Be A Girl Fight

Farrah is the
textbook definition of 'emotional roller coaster,' Hater took a sweat
box to a fancy party, Shockin is going to have babies and Cash is super
psyched about next week's hot tub. Amy Holler Bender is with us to talk
about her work with the Children's Tumor Foundation and her amazing
daughter. This week's rule is a unique situation from the track
involving both 3.1.2 and 6.11.9 and why it's not always best to "play
the cut." We are joined by Andrew Hoefling of Flour City Fear and he
talks about the excitement surrounding the Fear's home opener this
weekend. The song of the week, Pork and Beans by Weezer, comes to us
from RCRD's Post Mortimer. Blue two seven done.

Music Show #8 – 8/19/2016 – Humorous original songs.

Music Show #8 at Archive.org

Song #1 “If I Could Only” – A humorous look back at some youthful hopes and dreams. In the end this bouncy song should leave one hopeful for the future when a lot empty goals are put aside.

Song #2 “It’s a Treat to See the Sun Rochester” – A song for a city, Rochester, NY,  that used to set the record for the least amount of sunshine for many winters. It speaks highly of the friends I got to know there.

Song #3 “Self Employed” – This song tells the story of one person’s struggle to break away from the tortures of working for someone else and succeeding on their own.

Song #4 “Just Make Me Laugh” – An introspective, philosophical examination on the all consuming needs of some to only want to laugh through life and not have to think.

Song #5 “Making Us All Look Nuts”– Sometimes our politics in the U.S. seem so bizarre to the rest of the world that they just shake their heads and wonder what we we’re thinking.

Song #6 “Things Will Be Better Soon” – If we’re always waiting for things to get better soon before we enjoy life then we might miss an awful lot of good stuff along the way.

Song #7 “The Turtle Soup Trot” – A bike adventure song about a friend with a green parka that had a spill in the rain on some railroad tracks.

Song #8 “The Party Song” –A bouncy song about attending a party that I wished I hadn’t.

Song #9 “Little Ditties” –We’re all gonna  “sing our little ditties and act a little silly and make our lives complete.”

Brain Development with Dr. Richard Ryan

When I knew that Rochester Free Radio was going to become a thing, and that my podcast, The Stuart Bedasso Show was going to become a show on RFR, I knew I had to have a show on Brain Development.  Why?  Because in my mind (no pun intended), that’s everything.  That’s why, as individuals, we are who we are.  The brain develops because of genetics and environment, but understanding how each make your brain what it is gives you a chance to be happier.  And isn’t that what it’s all about?

Then I had to figure out who to have on?  I remember Richard Ryan from when I first started dipping my toe into the education activism pond.  This was up his alley…well, relatively.  I knew he wasn’t a neuroscientist, but I didn’t want that.  My intention wasn’t an anatomy lesson.  Anyway, this is what we ended up with.  I had a great time and Richard did as well.  I hope you find it illuminating.  Share it with someone who needs to get their shit together.

Music Show #7 – 8/12/2016 – Protecting the environment.

Music Show #7 at Archive.org
The theme of this week’s show is protecting our environment.

Song #1 “Until this Planet’s Green” – We have a duty to protect Mother Earth and to help her heal when we have damaged her delicate balance. “We can’t let her die in the hands of greed.”

Song #2 “Leda” – During my studies of the Old Master’s painting techniques I did a painting of “Leda and the Swan.” It was based off of a copy made by a student of Leonardo’s, because the original has been lost. Although some believe that Leonardo’s original was probably darker and more along the look of the Mona Lisa, I chose to use the brighter colors used by his student. This was much more like the spirit that I was in at the time. Later on I wrote this song about the painting and my relationship with Leda i.e. Gaia/Mother Earth.

Song #3 “Lake Placid” – In the 1970s the Adirondacks in New York were facing catastrophic effects from the clouds of acid rain flowing in from Ohio. Many of the trees were being killed and many lakes were becoming dead lakes with no fish within them. Much needed attention was brought to the problem and then with the efforts of the Department of Environmental Conservation the amount of acid rain falling there  was greatly reduced.

Song #4 “This Land Needs Care from You and Me” – Today there are many people who feel that the land is theirs to exploit and abuse with little regard for any environmental concerns. This song proposes that the land is really the Creator’s or the organizing energy that has created it and that we are most importantly stewards of the land.

Song #5 “Who’s Laughing Now?”– There are many  people who deny the science of climate change and the effects of human behavior. This song is a gentle reminder that perhaps we should listen more carefully to what the scientific research is telling us.

Song #6 “Sittin’ Back Up in the Woods” – A good time song about living back up in the woods with my friends.

Song #7 “The Mother Earth Destruction Blues” – One of the bounciest, foot tapping songs about Mother Earth’s destruction that you’ll ever hear.
